Identifying Hidden Value in Crawley Homes
At first glance, the property appeared to contain standard household effects with no items of significant monetary value. However, our “Expert Eye” for historical assets, developed over 20 years of working within the Crawley area, led us to a small, unassuming box that contained this significant find.
- The Collection: The 20 sovereigns were in excellent condition, representing a tangible link to the gold standard of the early 20th century.
- Integrity and Transparency: Upon identifying the coins, we immediately notified the client. We were able to offer an allowance of £4,000 for the collection, providing the Crawley estate with a substantial financial benefit that the family had not anticipated.
- Why Provenance Matters: Discoveries like this highlight why homeowners in Crawley require professional auditing. Without a trained eye, these coins could easily have been overlooked or lost during a standard disposal process.
A Legacy of Trusted Service in Crawley
Gold sovereigns were minted in the United Kingdom from 1817 until 1917, and again in specific years like 1925. They were often sent abroad for international payments and frequently melted down, making intact collections found in private homes increasingly rare.
About sovereigns
Sovereigns were minted in the United Kingdom from 1817 to 1917, and again from 1957. You can read more about the heritage of these historic coins at the Royal Mint. Our discovery of 20 sovereigns in Crawley represents a rare intact collection from the early 20th century.
In 1908 a Canadian branch of the British Royal Mint was opened in Ottawa. As well as producing silver and base metal coins for everyday use, the new Canadian mint also turned the recently discovered gold into sovereigns striking intermittently between 1908 and 1919.
In Victorian times it was the practice of the Bank of England to remove worn sovereigns and half sovereigns from circulation and to have them recoined.
Consequently, although a billion sovereigns have been minted in total, that figure includes gold that has been coined and recoined a number of times.
In addition, when coins were sent to places such as the United States for international payments between governments, they were frequently melted down into gold bars because of the Federal regulations then in force.
When gold coins were finally withdrawn from circulation in 1933 in the US, many thousands of British gold sovereigns were consigned to the melting pot in this way.
